In April, Diane Hassett supported LEROs’ Claire McInerney and the Irish Computer Society in the Scratch National Final. Here she tells us some more about it.

“I helped out with judging the Irish Scratch competition. On the day I was paired with an industry volunteer and we had a total of 7 projects to judge from 1st to 3rd year students from across Ireland.  They had 10 minutes slot to tell us about their project with a powerpoint presentation followed by a live demonstration about their projects. All done over zoom, this move online made no impact on their enthusiasm and professionalism!  The standard was high, with projects relating to covid-19, climate change and storytelling. The students were able to show their creative skills and problem solving approaches in getting the programs to work. The event concluded with an Award ceremony and LERO guest speaker Dr Chris Exton on a talk named “ From little things, big things grow “. The whole experience was super, it’s great to see some potential software engineers of the future!”
